August Nature Box Review / Why I Canceled!

Edit 12/2014: For the sake of continuity and honesty, I have kept this review active. However, I would love to share with anyone reading this post, that I have since started receiving Nature Box again, (Over a year since I wrote this review) and I have been extremely happy with their service and the positive changes they have made. This review is well over a year old, and I invite you to check out a more current one here. Thank you!

In some of my previous posts, I discussed the similarities and differences between Graze Box and Nature Box. I thought that Nature Box might be a better fit for me, so I put my Graze subscription on hold (I wouldn't cancel because it's impossible to get a subscription right now!) and decided to continue with Nature Box for a period of time.

After receiving 3 boxes from Nature Box, I can say I am most definitely canceling my service. This box had more issues than I've ever had with a single order from ANYWHERE, not to mention they were very shady when it came to addressing my complaints.

Before I get into what happened, I will tell you that when I complained about my issues, they responded and did not say a word about my complaints or concerns that I had with the quality of their snacks. They simply said: "We can refund your money or replace the snacks." I asked for a refund because I had already canceled my subscription at this point. Do you know what Nature Box did as a "refund?" They charged me yet ANOTHER $20 and then refunded it back into my account. UHM...No. That's not a refund! That's you stealing my money and giving it back to me and saying you refunded me.
EDIT: I sent them a furiously angry e-mail about charging me and then refunding the charge, but STILL not refunding the money from the previous box, and they eventually did credit my account back $22.95 (no idea where they came up with that amount) but they never responded to my angry e-mail. At least I finally got my money back.

Either way, I felt like I should review the snacks I did receive so that anyone that is a subscriber to Nature Box will be able to know the issues I had etc.

I received a box of 11 snacks this month. I had 10 snacks that I received for 50% off of due to a complaint I had from my second month. (sensing a pattern here?) They also added a "bonus snack" in my box making it 11 total bags.

Here's a quick rundown of the rest of the snacks and what was right and mostly wrong with them:

1. Cherry Ganache Granola
No issues with this granola. I had received this in my introductory box and was so pleased that I ordered it again. The chocolate granola is delicious as is the dried berries and the almonds.

2. Cinnamon Spiced Granola
This granola smells divine; Like a brisk fall day! My main issue with this granola was that it was chewy. As if it had been sitting in a humid area for too long. It wasn't crunchy and fresh tasting like the cherry ganache granola. Very big let down.

3. Cranberry Almond Bites
I received the blueberry almond bites last month and they were quite good, so I went ahead and ordered the cranberry ones. I think these would have been just as good had they not been completely stale and dried out. These also tasted old.

4. Figgy Bars
I received the blueberry figgy bars last month and thought I would try the regular ones. These were awful. The outer part of the bar was all dried up and stale tasting. The fruit inside tasted fine. Was very disappointed in these and noticed that the expiration date was only 2 weeks from the day I received them.

5. Cocoa Waffle Wafers
These were just plain awful. They tasted like little pieces of burnt toast sprinkled with artificial sweetener. I'm not even making that up. Let's top that off with the fact that they tasted stale as hell. (it's like they left ALL my snacks out to dry for a week before shipping them!)

6. Honey Nut Medley
These were OK, but nothing to write home about. Just a variety of nuts with a honey glaze on them.

7. Pistachio Power Clusters
I was expecting these to taste delicious because I love pistachios. I didn't realize that the pistachios and the almonds mixed with the honey glaze over them would just have a strange flavor. Pistachios don't really mix well with a very sweet glaze. These weren't awful, but weren't very good, either.

8. Plantain Chips
This was my "bonus snack" and one of my favorites of the bunch. I didn't think I would like these but they're quite tasty. Upon first tasting them, they do have a slight banana flavor, but after your 3rd or 4th chip they just start tasting like a thick potato chip that is very lightly salted. Very happy with this snack.

9.Ranch Sunflower Seeds
These were very good and definitely my favorite snack in the bunch. The only one (other than the bonus snack) that I had no issues with. Very good ranch flavor. I was definitely concerned eating them though as I've had a lot of issues with the seeds that Nature Box sends.

10.Everything Bagel Sticks
These were exactly like the Honey Mustard Sticks I tried last month. They're little sesame sticks that are coated with a seasoning. However the sesame stick is SO overpowering in flavor that the seasoning is barely noticeable. It just tastes like you're eating a bag of sesame seeds. Not a fan of these at all.

11. Garlic Pumpkin Seeds
These were the absolute worst of the bunch.  I don't even have a picture of these because I threw them in the garbage within minutes of trying them. When I opened the package, I noticed that the seeds smells a bit like the fish food flakes you put in a fish bowl. I thought it could have been the garlic flavor, so I tasted a few. Not only did they not taste like Garlic at ALL, but they TASTED like FISH. I was SO freaked out by this, that I did a bit of research online and found out that if your seeds smells fishy, it's because the oils in the seed have gone rancid! I was disgusted by this, especially because the expiration date wasn't for another 2 months.

*****************************************************************

As you can see, almost my entire box of snacks was old, stale, or gross-tasting. It's one thing if some of the snacks weren't up to par flavor-wise. It happens. Not everyone has the same preferences. But the fact that a majority of my snacks tasted like they were past their expiration date was really alarming to me. The company did nothing but say, "sorry you were unhappy, do you want replacements or a refund?" They weren't at all concerned with the quality of their snacks, and I think that was what most concerned me. I understand that these things happen occasionally when dealing with food, but as a company who apparently prides themselves on healthy, fresh snacks, they did a pretty terrible job of sending me any.

I cannot in good conscience continue to subscribe to this company/review their snacks after this experience.

If you are interested in a subscription service that sends healthy snacks to your door, please consider Graze Box. They are a wonderful company and I have getting snacks from them on and off for almost a year. You can get your 1st and 5th boxes free, as well. For more information on Graze, check out one of my reviews here:  Graze Review!

  1. Our NatureBox package tasted completely stale and rancid although the expiration date was another 3 months out. It makes me wonder if they're offering all these promo deals because they have stale inventory sitting around. I don't think they're moving their product fast enough. They could also improve the flavor a bit too.

    1. Wow. :( We're definitely not the only ones with these issues. A few people commented on my facebook complaint on their wall and said they had the same problems. It's not worth spending so much money for their service and expecting healthy snacks and only receiving old, stale, bland food. I agree on the flavor as well. Even when I get snacks I enjoy, they don't stack up to the yummy Graze Box snacks I've received.

  2. Glad I saw this review, most all the other reviews I had seen before this were glowing reports of how good everything was. But I also noticed the packages those reviewers had gotten were specially put together by a higher up exec just for the reviewer... after seeing this review it makes that look a little shady.

I've been buying stuff from stores around where I live, but heard about this and wanted to see if it would be an easier/cheaper way of getting tasty healthy snacks, guess I'll stick with local stores.

    1. I can tell you the first box I got was delicious, and the quality of the snacks continued to go down each month after that. Even the snacks that had a good flavor still weren't the best tasting healthy snacks I've ever tried. I'm glad my review helped you, though! I would definitely recommend Graze Box if you're still interested in getting healthy snacks delivered to you!

  3. I decided to look up other complaints after my horrible experience with them, and i havent even ordered from them. Im an honest company subscriber and absolutely love their products. In my last shipment there was a pamphlet for naturebox for a free shipment, only $1.97 shipping. Sounds great. Thought on it for a little while, talked it over with hubs and we decided, what the hell, might as well. Ugh. Tried the code, didnt work, hmmm first red flag. Emailed them. Over a week later i get a response, send them the code to see if its already bern used, um ok, why would it have alreafy been used, it was n a sealed package. Sent the code anyways. Response from them, yeah it doesnt work, honest company must be sending out bad codes, we dont even offer free boxes, how bout we give you a box for 50% off for your troubles. Red flag number 2. I have alreafy revieved three emails previous to this response offering that same deal. I email back, tell them it was their pamplet, not some little thing thrown in there by the honest company and call them out on their shaddiness. They should have offered to honor the code THEY sent. This last email i got from them was them tellinf me to try the code again on a different part of their page. Are they kidding me, they already stated the code didnt work, and again offered me the 50% off deal because thats the best they can do. No thank you. They seem like a shady business and using other companies to trick people into thinking they will get one thing and switching it to something else and hoping people will think its such a good deal they get it anyways. Wish i would have found your review first and saved myself dealing with rhis shady company in the first place.

    1. That's awful! I know that they always offer 50% off the first box you get. That's not "for your troubles," but what they offer EVERYONE. I know that when I canceled with them, suddenly they were sending me all these e-mails saying, "please come back here's a coupon code for 3 months half off!" and I was just not interested. I wouldn't sign back up if they gave me 3 FREE months. When you're looking for fresh, healthy snack alternatives this is the very last place I would ever look. They don't care about the quality of their snacks at all. My original complaint to them about the rancid seeds was met with a very simple, "do you want a new bag or your money back?" They were not at all concerned that this happened, they didn't assure me that it was uncommon or that it would never happen again. It was really unsettling. There are just TOO many good monthly food services for them to be so nonchalant about the quality of their snacks.

You definitely dodged a bullet by not subscribing to them! Thanks for sharing your story so that others an see it too. I'm very passionate about people knowing when a company is not what it seems!

    2. Im am so glad that i found your post. I thought maybe i was alone in my experience, based on all the rave reviews i had read. I am also glad i found your post because if i hadnt i never would have even heard of graze. Which i now have started with. Im excited after reading the reviews and checking out what they have to offer to be receiving my first shipnent hopefully this week sometime. I am glad to have shared my story so that others will know what a horrible company they are.

    3. Oh you will LOVE Graze! The snacks come pre-portioned so you can just take one and toss it in your bag, and you're able to rate each snack individually. They're always coming out with new snacks to try and everything is so fresh! They have excellent customer service too! Any time I've had a question or an issue (once my box was a few days late and they credited my account for a free box, no questions asked!) they have always handled it quickly and kindly. Can't say enough good things about them!

    4. I love Graze! I started a subscription a couple months ago and have had no complaints. There were a couple snacks I didn't care for but it was just personal preference - nothing wrong with them. The snacks are proportioned and easy to just grab and go. My only problem is hiding them from my kids!

    5. That's the great thing about Graze! I've had a few snacks I didn't like, simply because of personal preference, but I can "trash" them and never receive them again. There's so many snacks to choose from so trashing the ones I don't like still leaves so many options. I love the grab and go aspect of their packaging too! And while I don't have kids, I have a hard time hiding the flapjacks from my fiance! :)

    7. Just saw David Tutera promoting them on some show this morning. I thought that might be a cool gift for some friends for the holidays. I am so glad I saw this first!

    8. Just cancelled my subscription as well. Requested the "free sampler" in October (that I paid shipping to get) and never got it. Never received the next two orders either. Don't know what's going on with this company.

  5. Thanks for the info! I was considering trying the 50% off deal.
I had problems myself with Conscious Box. I received an expired coupon from them as well, it was missing a sample, and the value of the box was around $10 if I stretch it and include the samples. Only 2 full size products with a value of $2 between them. I don't need any more sub box issues so i appreciate the warning! drafting a blog warning myself right now...

  7. Very glad I found your blog as I was trying to, on THEIR SITE, subscribe but it kept giving me broken links. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with Naturebox. Thank you for saving those of us that find this blog post the frustration that you had to go through. And the fish food smell of the oils gone bad and having turned rancid. I think CS would have passed me onto their little boss because they couldn't have handled the truth being thrown at them. Doesn't seem as if they have much knowledge on the products anyway.

    1. haha it sure sounds like it, but I promise it's not! :) You can see by the other comments that this was a recurring issue with Nature Box. Although this almost a year old at this point, so it's possible they've turned things around!

    2. i agree it's an ad for graze. anyone thinking about graze ought to check the reviews. The reviews are more recent and way worse.

    3. Considering this review was made WELL over a year ago, I cannot attest to how Graze is now, only how it was when this review was written. I don't work for Graze, nor do I get free product from them. I simply enjoyed their service better. If you are a regular reader of my blog, you would notice that I am now a regular subscriber of Nature Box. I leave my old reviews as they are so people can see how things have progressed.

  9. I ordered because it sounded good, it was terrible I'm canceling....

  10. I had much the same experience with Naturebox. My first box was great. The second one was so-so, and they were out of two of the snacks I wanted most to try. The two items they sent in exchange were terrible, but there was no way to "trash" them so I didn't get them again. When my third box contained one of those things again, along with others that were virtually inedible, I decided to cancel. Have not missed them at all. And like others, I LOVE Graze. Everything I've tried has been tasty, and being able to select things you never want to receive is awesome.

  11. Naturebox sucks!!! Tastes like poo!

  12. I have been a NatureBox subscriber for the past 3 months. Some of their snacks are AMAZING (honey sunflower seeds, kettle kernels, bbq sunflower seeds), some of them are just ok (praline pumpkin seeds, plantain chips) some of the snacks are terrible (honey mustard sesame sticks), but I could say the same thing about some of the stuff I tried at wholefoods. And funny enough, whatever my family doesn't like, I can quickly give away at my office (the honey mustard sesame sticks were quickly taken away by my coworker Pia). To each their own. That being said, I think everything on the graze website looks yucky and am firmly for Naturebox.

    1. Yes you've said it well To each Their Own. I've reviewed both and it's really up to the person what they want to do. Your issue my not be the next persons issue. I've seen very bad reviews about Graze as well. Just like a fast food or restaurants has both bad n good,, my mother went to a restaurant where they tried to over charge her for what the meal really cost but people still go there. It's totally up to the individual, But i'm still indecisive so either i'll take a chance or I want, my decision. But still REVIEWS are sometimes Helpful but only if they are Legit, which can leave you at a HUMMMMMM!!!!

  13. Wow, Naturebox did this same thing to me about a year ago, maybe longer. I cancelled and they kept charging me and would refund me once without answering for the previous charges! Shady!

  14. I feel obligated to offer a POSITIVE comment on this subscription service! First off, I am not a youtuber, nor am I a blogger or a review, I am simple an American who is subscribed to nature bos. This makes me angry as I have never had any of these issues and neither has any of my friends/family/coworkers who are subscribers. I have always received quality snacks and care. This post makes me downright angry. To everyone reading, do not listen, this sounds to me like a few disgruntled customers. These snacks have not only been of wonderful quality but they have also been very helpful in keeping my family and I out of unhealthy snacks. This box offers something for everyone, and I have never once received a stale snack. If I ask to have my box shipped on a Tuesday, it is there by Thursday or Friday, never fails. Fast shipping, good quality, fantastic customer service, and wonderful tasting snacks!

    1. I just want to make it perfectly clear that this review was posted over a year ago, and there's nothing to suggest that Nature Box hasn't improved their snacks over time. At the time I wrote this post, I was giving my honest and truthful experience and opinion on the snacks. They were bad/spoiled. There's no way around that. The customer service was absolutely terrible. There's also no way around that, either. I'm a blogger. It's my job to write my experiences, even if I'm the only person that this happened to (which by the comments, you'll see it's not) I'm still obligated to write about my honest experience. At the time I wrote this post, my blog was just getting off the ground, and just because I started a blog, doesn't make me any different from you. I am also a simple American to everyone else around me. I paid full price for my Nature Box and enjoyed my first two months for the most part, if you go back and read my reviews prior to this one.

I had a very bad experience that compelled me to write this review. I am always honest in my experiences, and to call me disgruntled is really a shame on your part. I encourage you to check out the rest of my blog and see that my reviews are always genuine and honest.

I even wrote a follow up post about Nature box snacks after the company reached out to me to make it right. While I didn't love the snacks, they were at least pretty decent quality and worlds better than what I received in the box you read about here.

But simply because a company has possibly changed over time, does not mean that my situation did not occur, and it does not mean that I should suddenly delete this post. This is something that happened, and people should know about it, even if it was a one-time thing, or something that happened frequently.

I am happy to hear that they have bettered their service, and that you're enjoying it and it's benefitting your family. Just remember that as you have a right to share your positive thoughts and feedback, I have the same right to share my negative experience.

PS: Nature Box thanked me for writing this review and letting them know things they needed to work on. It's because of "disgruntled customers" see: people unhappy with bad service, that companies are able to see their issues, work on them, and make a better product.

  16. I agree. I admit I loved the jalapeno cashews. But at the same time, I hated the vegetable sunshine chips (too oily!). All the other snacks were okay, but not great.

The real problem came when I tried to cancel. I just noticed for the second month in a row now, I'm being charged for a box after I tried to cancel my subscription. Their website is not easy to use, and their phone operators are either liars or incompetent.

  17. I was curious about nature box until i looked at the items and their ingredients. Everyone seems to be advertising them as a HEALTHY Snack shop that sends you snacks to help you stay on track with nutrition on the go... By the looks of it most of their items are simply gourmet junk foods.
Sugar, Soy bean Oil, Vegetable aka Palm Oil, Dextrose etc... Those are not the ingredients of true health oriented snacks....

My interest is gone.... but was curious to see if any one else noticed their nutritional labels.
