Birchbox January 2013 Review!

Birchbox has been kind of hit and miss for me over the past few months since I re-started my subscription back in October, but it's been steady enough to make me want to continue getting it. Their points system is just too good to pass up! You get about $5 in rewards points for each month, and you can turn around and cash those babies in for a full size product in the Birchbox shop. No other subscription service is as generous with their points, and I think that it makes the Birchboxes themselves even more valuable!

As always, the quick rundown of Birchbox: Birchbox is a subscription service that sends boxes to your door filled with deluxe samples of beauty and lifestyle products for $10 a month. As mentioned above, you can review those products for 10 Birchbox points each. 100 points can be redeemed as $10 in their online store to buy full sized items. You can save up your Birchbox points for up to a year before they expire. If you're interested in trying out Birchbox, please consider using my referral link here:  Try Birchbox!

While last month was less disappointing than November, I was still hoping for something geared a bit more towards my interests. I don't think that January's box completely nailed it, but they are getting much closer! It seems that the more boxes you get and the more products you review, the better and more tailored to you the boxes become. Let's see if this continues to be a trend in the following months!

This month's theme was "Go Time" and it's geared toward starting fresh, making resolutions and keeping yourself motivated! I don't know how much my products fit in with the theme, but I definitely think that trying all of these new products is a great way to start the new year fresh!

First impression shot:

The box was packaged a bit messier than usual. Not that it's a big deal, I just noticed there's no pillow pack holding any of the smaller samples and they're all kind of jumbled around in the box. No worries, though! Onto the samples!

1. Nail Rock

I was kind of excited to try these, although I saw many other samples that they were offering this month that would have better suited my tastes. Nail Rock is a type of nail art system that can contain little fuzzy velvet, sequins, glitter, and 'caviar' or essentially, tiny circular beads. The idea is to paint a coat of polish on your nails and let it dry. Then you paint a second coat. While that coat is still wet, you dunk your nail into the glitter/sequins etc and then gently press/tap on them to help them stick to the polish. I received the caviar style of nail art, and I peeked at a few reviews. These apparently do not stay on your nails for more than 24 hours, and if you attempt to put a top coat on, it makes the color bleed off the caviar beads. I haven't actually tried these out yet. When I do, I'll do a more in-depth review. But I can see these being great for a night out, but not as a regular manicure.

2. Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk

I have heard amazing things about this product. I've seen many people asking to trade for it on some of the makeup forums I frequent, yet unfortunately, I just don't do dry shampoos. This month, Birchbox is sampling a "dry conditioner" which I would have much rather tried. I know that my roommate N is very much into dry shampoos, because he hates washing his hair (lol) so I might just hand this over to him if I can't trade it off. I can't speak on the quality of the product, but from what I've heard, it's a good one.

3. Paula's Choice Resist C15 Super Booster

Tiny tube, large package! This is the only product in the bunch I'm actually excited to try. Paula's Choice has been around for a long time, and I've heard wonderful things about the line of skincare from people in the makeup community that I highly respect, but I just haven't gotten around to trying anything! I also recently found out that they sell samples at a reasonable price on their website, so I might just head over there soon and order a few things to try out along with this serum. I'll keep you updated on what I think!

4. 100% Pure Hand Buttercream

Cool. Ketchup packets of lotion. *tosses in giveaway pile* Look, I'm sure this is a great lotion and maybe I would even love it...but foil packets just don't do it for me. It's fine if each packet has one use, and we get multiple packets. I don't have the patience for "multiple use" foil packets as I have so many products in my house that I am not going to use little packets for months at a time when I could be using other things. I like single use packets in larger quantities because I can use them and then toss the packet out right afterwards. I would have preferred a smaller tube that I could toss into my purse. I think I might find a small jar of some sort and squeeze all of these into it so I can at least re-seal it and get a genuine idea of how well these work. Until then I'll hold my judgement!

5. Ahmad Assorted Teas

This is the 2nd Birchbox I've received teas in. I've received 4 boxes so far, and every other box has had teas. I do not like tea, do not want tea, and keep receiving it. Giveaway pile it goes.

Here's the box overall. Birchbox also included a collection of inspirational note cards to get you motivated and thinking positively in 2014. Cute. :)

Overall this box was a step in the right direction. I don't think it was a great box for me. The Nail Rock is interesting. I like to get things like this in subscription boxes because it's fun to try and I wouldn't normally buy something like this. I don't use dry shampoo, but I think this is a great size sample and I would love to try the dry conditioner, so I'll keep my hopes up for that! I'm excited to try the Paula's Choice! I think it's a great size bottle and a well-known brand. I would be more excited to try the 100% Pure if it wasn't in a stinkin' ketchup packet, and I am just a step away from throwing these damn teas out the window, haha. Overall a decent box, but not suited for me, personally.

Looking forward to next month, as always! Let's hope for a box filled with things I will use and love!
