Allure Sample Society August 2014

Allure Sample Society has been getting a LOT of buzz in the beauty subscription world, recently. Formerly known as Beauty Bar Sample Society, the boxes usually contained a nice assortment of mid-to-high end beauty products, however it was known for being skincare-heavy and admittedly, not always a hit.

Last month, Sample Society was completely revamped and taken over by Allure. Last month's box was filled with all kinds of lovely samples from across the board beauty-wise. It was one of the most well-curated boxes I have received in the under $20 price point (Sample Society is $15), and since receiving it I have used and enjoyed everything! Since that box was revealed, Sample Society has seen a surge in popularity, as it's a only slightly more expensive alternative to it's rivals, Birchbox and Ipsy.

Believe it or not, one of my absolute favorite parts of the Sample Society boxes is the in-depth product information booklet. The intro is written by the beauty director of Allure Magazine, Patricia Tortolani, and she goes on to explain what her inspiration was curating the box, as well as going into detail describing each product and how she uses it.

1. Oribe: Surfcomber Tousled Texture Mousse
I am a big fan of Oribe haircare, but don't really use mousse that often. I was interested to read a bit more about this product, and found that it's used on dry hair to achieve soft "surfer girl" waves. I have slightly wavy hair naturally, but I am always looking for products like this so I can have a more defined look to my hair as it tends to get a bit frizzy on occasion. Quite happy with this product and I'm excited to try it out!

 2. Too Faced: Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in "Melted Peony"
I have been wanting to try these Melted lipsticks from Too Faced for a while now. I've seen them around and have read a few reviews, but with a product like this, you never really know how it's going to work for you until you try it yourself. I was thrilled to see this in the box, because it's a color that is going to work on a large amount of people, and it gives me a chance to really try the product out before I go and buy a full size.
While it looks like a gloss at first, and applies similar to one, it actually dries matte on the lips and is very long-lasting. It has a little fuzzy-tipped applicator and the product squeezes through it, so you have lots of control on how much product you want to apply. I'm enjoying the formula and how long it stays put, but I do think that it's a bit drying. I definitely need to exfoliate and put a bit of balm on my lips before applying, but it has a great color payoff!

3. Ciate Paint Pots Nail Polish in "Cha Cha Cha"
I have never tried Ciate polishes before. I've heard good things, so I was excited to see a mini bottle in the box this month. I was taken aback by the insanely bright neon orange, but after reading the info card, I'm a bit more at ease trying it out. Allure suggests using it as a fun toenail polish, which I will absolutely do! They also mentioned that they tried it on their nails with a glossy topcoat and got lots of compliments. So hey...If I'm feeling daring before summer is over, I know exactly what polish I'll be using!

4. Kate Somerville: Dilo Oil Restorative Treatment
I'm a huge fan of Kate Somerville skincare products, although they are rarely in my budget. This is another product I've heard some buzz about in the beauty world, so I'm thrilled to give it a try. This is a fast absorbing facial oil that is used as a moisturizer, brightener and skin firmer. It's got all kinds of skin-loving ingredients (marine extracts, rice-bran, rosemary to name a few!) and doesn't leave your skin feeling oily, which is important! I haven't tried this one out yet, but I think I will switch out my current serum and give this a whirl!

5. Jane Iredale: Longest Lash Thickening and Lengthening Mascara in "Black Ice"
I have loved and reviewed many Jane Iredale products in the past, but I have never tried any of their mascaras. This one has a very large brush and the formula contains tiny fibers. Normally I'm not one for fiber mascaras, but these are so fine that there are undetectable when applied. Jane Iredale is known for their safe, natural makeup, so this mascara was non-irritating, as well as very "natural" in finish. I like more of a dramatic look on my lashes, so this mascara didn't work for me. However, after 4 coats, there was no clumping at all, and my lashes did look thicker and longer, just on a more natural level. There are plenty of ladies out there that like the "no-makeup" makeup look, so if that's you- I would absolutely recommend this!

Overall Thoughts
I am still loving Allure Sample Society. I can say I definitely preferred last months box to this one, but that's because I'm a Butter London addict, and I was really loving the highlighter from that box as well. I still think that the August box is a very well-rounded, well curated box. I feel like you can use each product in one day, which to me makes for a box that feels well thought out. I can see myself at the beach, having used the Dilo Oil in the morning and swiping on a natural mascara and a pretty pink lip color. My bright orange toenails buried in the sand, finished off with some gorgeous beachy waves thanks to Oribe!
Overall I am pleased with this month's box, and I will happily and excitedly wait for what September will have to offer. I am hoping for some fall must-haves to get me prepared for my favorite season!

  1. This is a really awesome box! Birchbox better watch out if Sample Society keeps releasing boxes like this, man.

    1. I agree! The Beauty Bar Sample Society was always nice, but they did tend to get a little redundant with the endless skincare samples. I'm really loving the new brands they've been featuring and it just feels a bit more high end than Birchbox. I like that BB introduces me to new brands but with all the policy changes going on with their points etc, more people are looking for alternative boxes in a similar price. I've noticed a lot more unhappiness with Ipsy lately too, so they better get their act together soon!

  2. Nice box. It seems that Sample society improved dramatically recently. I might cancel Ipsy and sign up for this instead. Birchbox is too dear to my heart, so it's safe for now.
