Birchbox August 2014

I was so insanely busy last month that I completely forgot to review my Birchbox! Most of the products are strewn about my room and half empty at this point, so I just decided to call it a loss and move forward with my August Birchbox!

If you somehow haven't heard of Birchbox by now, you've either been living under a rock, or are completely new to the subscription box world. Birchbox is one of the biggest and most successful beauty subscription companies. For $10 a month, they will mail you a box each month filled with beauty samples (usually between 4-7 products) that are chosen for you depending on the answers you provide on your beauty profile.

This month's theme was "Lighten Up," referring to letting loose and relaxing during the hot Summer weather. Although here in New England, this August has felt more like late September, so it's hard to relate to the heat-related themes of my subscription boxes this month! I feel like I already need to unearth my scarves fro the depths of my closet!

1. Benefit Cosmetics: The POREfessional
2. theBalm Cosmetics: Stainiac in "Beauty Queen"
The Porefessional is a tried and true product for me. I have a zillion of these little tubes in my makeup drawer just waiting to be used up, and this one will just be added to the pile. While I love a good primer that hides away my giant pores, I'm kind of over receiving samples of this product. I'll definitely use it, but since I like Birchbox to introduce me to new products, this was kind of a let down.

I love theBalm cosmetics, and I have already tried Stainiac in the past. I don't actually have one in my makeup collection though, so I was pleased to receive this cute travel-sized version. This really is an excellent lip stain that isn't too intense, but gives off just the right amount of color.

3. Whish: Shave Crave Shaving Cream in "Acai Grapefruit"
4. Atelier Cologne in "Orange Sanguine"
I already received this shaving cream when I was still getting 2 boxes. While this is yet another product I have already tried, I really love this shaving cream, so it's another "boring but happy to use up" kind of product.

I have been receiving Atelier cologne products in my Birchboxes for years now. I prefer not to receive many perfume samples simply because I have my favorite perfumes that I wear repeatedly, and rarely reach for my samples. If I DO reach for a sample, it's going to be one with a spray top so I can travel with it. These Atelier perfume samples are kind of a pain to apply, and really have never been anything so amazing that I felt the need to keep it. This one is going in the give away pile.

5. derma-e: Hydrating Mist with Hyaluronic Acid
I have tried this brand before, but this hydrating mist is a completely new product to me. I love facial mists, and ever since getting heavily into skincare, I've been hoarding them like a magpie. Birchbox explains that this can be used anywhere on the body or face and also makes a great setting spray for makeup. Since my setting spray is getting dangerously low and I have a mountain of skincare from Memeboxes, I think this product will be perfect to fill the setting spray slot in my routine.

Overall Thoughts
If more of these products were new-to-me, I would be a lot more excited about this box. 4 out of the 5 products in the box this month are things I've already tried, or things I own. I do think that I will use everything at some point, though. I'm happy with the hydrating mist, and honestly think this would be a fantastic box for anyone who hasn't tried these products or brands before. Overall it's a pretty decent selection. I just hope next month's box is filled with things I've never tried before. That is, after all, why I signed up for Birchbox in the first place!

  1. I didn't know that derma-e made a mist ... sounds promising! I really want to try the Pore-fessional but it has yet to show up in any of my boxes. Funny that you've ended up with a serious hoardpile of them, haha!

    1. I know I was super excited to see the mist, and it's a really great size! And haha I always have friends that take the little tubes of porefessional, and I always somehow end up with more! I don't think I've ever bought a full size and I use it all the time! ;)
