Valentia Even Glow Serum Review

Ah Vitamin C serums. They are the most mysterious type of product for my skin. Sometimes I pat some on and my skin drinks it up. Other times, I break out so badly that no magical cream can save me. I tend to avoid Vitamin C serums when I can, but when one falls in my lap I will cautiously try it and wait for the reaction. If I see one new bump on my face, I'm out. I'm surprised my friends aren't building houses out of all the vitamin C serums I've passed on to them!

I got the opportunity to review the Valentia Even Glow Vitamin C Serum and I wavered back and forth on whether or not I wanted to take the risk. However, the product seemed much different from your typical vitamin C skincare, so I decided to be brave and give it a go.

Our skin is damaged each day due to environmental pollutants, oxidative stress, and chemical laden cosmetic products. The amount of free radicals waging war on the skin quickly depletes our natural protective resources.
Our premier formulation is backed by scientific research into the efficacy of each of the natural ingredients we have carefully selected.
Our proprietary blend of skin super oils compliment our 20% Vitamin C base, leading to a powerful antioxidant treatment. Each natural ingredient was chosen to support and enhance Vitamin C’s efficacy on the skin, leading to more well-rounded serum to add to your daily skin care ritual.
Our Even Glow Serum will repair, refresh, and renew your skin; restoring evenness to your complexion, giving you an extra boost of confidence each time you look in the mirror.
I mean, they really make this stuff sound like the King of Vitamin C serums! I was absolutely down for this, even if it meant I'd have to suffer through a zit here and there!

Vitamin C: With a 20% concentration does more than boost the body’s immune system; it also provides many benefits to keep the skin tight, smooth and looking ageless. Vitamin C has been scientifically proven to reduces the effects of sun exposure on the skin, including sunburn, sun spots, redness and wrinkles. In addition to helping reduce the signs of aging, Vitamin C is essential for everyday maintenance to strengthen and smooth out the skin, as well as neutralizing free radicals before they can damage the skin.

Proprietary Organic Skin Tea, Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf (Aloe), Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C), Methlsulfonylmethane (MSM), Cassia Angustifolia Seed Polysaccharide (botanical hyaluronic acid), Globularia Cordifolia Callus Culture Extract (plant stem cells), Organic Rosa Canina (Rosehip Seed Oil), Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel), Citrus Paradisi (Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil), Carbomer, (2s)-2-Amino-5-guanidinopentanoic Acid, d-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Algae Extract, Camelia Oleifera (Japanese Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Hippophae Rhamnoides (Seabuckthorn Oil), Phenoxyethanol, Ethyl Hexyl Glyceri

According to the Valentia site, they chose specific added ingredients that boost the effects of Vitamin C on the skin, and they include:

Promote skin hydration, lock in moisture, fend off signs of aging.

    RESISTEM (Plant Stem Cells)
Provide protection from stress-related aging and promotes detoxification of the skin, while helping skin regenerate faster.

    HYALURONIC ACID(Botanical)
Very effective moisturizer, activates collagen production to produce a younger, brighter complexion.

Potent antioxidant that acts as an anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant.
I noticed that this particular serum was much thicker than other vitamin c serums I've used in the past. I did a little research and read that it's designed to be thicker to "reduce waste and further transport missing nutrients to the skin." I'm not exactly sure how a thicker serum does all that but hey- I'll take it.

The scent of this serum is by far the best. Most Vitamin C serums have a pretty offensive smell with a weird fake orange scent mixed in. This one smells exactly like a fresh squeezed orange, so I had absolutely no qualms about slapping this stuff on. I did notice when I applied it that it left a slightly sticky residue that did fade a bit when dried.

Since I don't really have many dark spots, or fine lines at this stage in the game, I could really only speak for how it made my skin look and feel overall. After 6 days of use, the dreaded acne began to form.
*cue the scary music*
As if they were psychic mind readers, Valentia sent out an e-mail about the serum on the SAME day that bumps were appearing. They explained about the correlation between Vitamin C serums and acne. If you also have suffered from acne when using vitamin C, this info might be helpful!

Quoted from the Valentia E-mail:
Vitamin C serums can sometimes spark a breakout when they are first used. This happens
because the serum is drawing out toxins from your skin and often after repeated use, sometimes a few weeks, the skin adjusts to the new level of nutrients it is receiving daily and these blemishes (amongst others) disappear. If this is you, we suggest lowering the amount used until your skin has time to adjust.
You may want to start off using a small amount daily and only in the evening. Be sure you
are using a high quality cleanser before bed and in the mornings as well. This will leave your pores cleaner and less likely to be clogged, reducing incidents of breakouts. Also, this helps the serum to absorb better into the skin
So as a diligent beauty blogger who will do anything to get the scoop on a product, of course I continued to use it and suffer through the short term breakouts right?
Sorry guys...I just couldn't do it! It's taken me literally my entire 29 years on Earth (I'm sure I was probably fighting acne as an infant) to finally get rid of the huge amount of acne I had. Adopting a Korean skincare routine was the key for me. While I'm always down to try and review a product to the best of my ability, I really don't want to go back down a road of constant breakouts just to see if this particular product does what it says.

What I will say, is in the 6 days of using this product before the breakouts, I genuinely saw a positive difference in my skin. It looked visibly brighter and more even-toned, similar to what my "brightening" serums from Korea will do. I think that if your skin really loves Vitamin C, or even if you've never tried a Vit. C serum, this is the one to try. The scent, the quick results I received and the decent price (only $30!) make this one a winner in my book. I just wish my skin would stop hating on Vitamin C so I could really see how well this stuff worked out long term!

  1. I don't blame you for quitting, "purging" is annoying to deal with. I experienced some when I started using tretinoin and it did NOT make me happy, haha.

    1. Exactly! A lot of people mention a "purging" stage when first starting to use the Clarisonic, which is what kept me from buying one for so long! I finally got enough Birchbox points and a coupon code to get one for free, and luckily it's been nothing but perfection for my skin. I don't do "purging" products. I know of way too many products that do wonders for my skin so there's no need to push myself through acne hell just to use a product! ;)

  2. Oh man, I feel you on the acne bit. I'm 29 and I've still got acne. Acne, grey hairs, and wrinkles. How is that fair?Whoever said acne was a teenage thing only seriously sucks.
