Andrea Schroder Candles: Candle of the Month Club (October 2014)

Candles are one of the few things I obsess over as much as beauty products. I grew up in a household that had a candle in every room of the house. My mom passed down her obsession to me, and it's rare that someone enters my house and doesn't ask what smells so good. It's my candles, people!
But in all seriousness, I feel like everyone needs to embrace candles in their homes. I know the Scentsy warmers smell nice and I've got a knockoff one in my bathroom, but nothing beats the scent of a good candle, and the ambiance that a warm, flickering flame creates. It just makes me want to open the windows and let the Autumn air in, curl up in a luxurious blanket and read a romance novel, ya know?

I usually get my candles at Bath and Body Works when I just need to stock up, but I'm always looking for "special occasion" candles. Some people have fancy dinnerware, I have fancy candles. I've also been searching for a candle subscription that feels beautifully curated and like a special, amazingly girly present to myself each month.

I didn't have to search long until I found Andrea Schroder Candles. Seriously, her candles are flying off the shelves at Hallmark and Nordstorm, and she has some of the most luxurious, unique scents on the market.
Andrea started making candles at her farmhouse as gifts for her friends and family. Her passion blossomed into a business that focuses on making the most luxurious candles from pure, organic coconut oil, which burns incredibly clean and is even safe to use as a body moisturizer. All of the candles in the collection are packaged with a poem that was written by her grandmother, which I think is just lovely!

Andrea Schroder Candles also has a Candle of the Month Club, which is what I will be reviewing here. While Andrea's candles cost $35 each on their own, a monthly membership not only saves you money, but there are extra special gifts included each month. The longer your membership, the more money you can save. You can choose between 3 different levels of Membership:

 3 Months: $99
6 Months: $189
12 Months: $349

Seeing as how each candle on it's own is $35, the membership prices are a great value!

I received the October Box, and I am so excited to share it with you!

Firstly, there is an information card that tells you a bit about the candles as well as the 12 scents that will be featured through the year.

Along with the information card, was this lovely note card! This is perfect, especially if you intend on giving this subscription as a gift. You could open up the shipping box, fill out the card and gift wrap the contents. (I'm already getting ideas for Christmas!)

As I had mentioned above, each month the box not only has the full size Candle of the Month ($35) but also special bonus gifts. The first gift I received was a travel candle in the scent, "Ocean Dune." I am not usually into Ocean/water scents, but this candle...oh my gosh it's so wonderful.
Imagine yourself in a gorgeous beach house with a wrap around porch. The wind is blowing, the waves are gently crashing in the distance, and freshly washed linens are drying on the line. That is exactly what this smells like. This would be perfect for a bathroom or an entryway, as it's incredibly warm and inviting.

The next bonus gift I received was a French Lavender scented natural soap. I love lavender. There is something so beautiful and calming about it. Unfortunately, much of the time when I find a lavender-scented beauty product, it smells "fake." This soap smells exactly like fresh lavender. I seriously want to melt it down into my next bath and just live in the water forever, that's how amazing it smells.

Finally comes the Candle of the Month. October's Candle is:
Tabac Noir!
I had absolutely no idea what this scent could possibly smell like by the name, other than possibly tobacco?
There is nothing on the candle that explains the scent, so I did a little research on their website to find out!
Tabac Noir is the scent of being around a crackling fire. This smoky wood scent will send you back to warm and inviting evenings with its unique blend of charred birch, cedar, amber, vanilla, and sandalwood. The tobacco plant is noted for its notes of fir, eucalyptus, hyacinth, thyme, and green moss.
This scent is absolutely, positively perfect for Fall. The first thing that hits you when you open the box is a fir/eucalyptus scent, but it's warmed by the amber, vanilla and sandalwood. You can definitely smell the cedar when it's burning. I'd say it smells like a really fancy campfire with a hint of warmth and sweetness.

As if this box couldn't get any more pretty, They also included 2 packages of Andrea Schroder matches, which just completes the entire curation beautifully.
The poem on the Tabac Noir Candle reads:
Give me a loving spirit
to enrich the life I live,
Give me a friendly heart
to share my joys and to forgive.
Overall Thoughts
The Andrea Schroder Candle of the Month club, costs either $33, $31.50 or $29 per box depending on which subscription you choose (1 month, 3 months or 12 months.) I couldn't find a price on the soap, but since the travel candle is $5.95, I'm assuming it would be around the same price. Including the note card (which is available for purchase on the site) the total value of this box is $48.85. For a high-end, luxury candle subscription, that is an absolutely fantastic value. You could go to the store and buy one of these candles on their own for $35, or buy the subscription and save a quite a good amount of money considering the bonus gifts!

I think this is one of the most lovely and well-curated boxes I've ever received, and I've gotten a LOT of subscriptions. I cannot recommend this more highly for any candle lover in your life, including yourself! Each scent is such an experience, and the packaging and attention to detail is just wonderful.

  1. I'm a big fan of scented candles too, and this subscription looks absolutely gorgeous. I know what you mean about "special occasion" candles ... I have a bunch of Yankee Candle votives and random scented tarts from Etsy around, but sometimes you just want something a bit "classier" for lack of a better explanation. :)

  2. I came across these candles in Hallmark a few months ago. Started with one, now I have several. Every scent is as unique as the poetry featured on the candle. My favorite for the bathroom is lavender linen. It is also very fragrant when it is not burning, which adds a nice touch to the room. Great review of a great product!
