Birchbox October 2014 Review and Unboxing

Another month, another Birchbox! I can't believe it's already halfway through October! My Birchbox tends to come later than most, but they do start to ship in the first week of the month.
This month, they continued their new "sample choice" option, which is where they give you the ability to choose one of the samples in your box. There have been occasions in the past where I don't choose because I want to be surprised, but this month I chose a lipstick. I always have a mighty need for more lipsticks in the Fall. Does anyone else feel that way? What is it about a really good lipstick that pulls an entire Fall look together?
What's Birchbox?
If you're unfamiliar with Birchbox, they are one of the reasons why subscription boxes are such a huge deal! They weren't the first beauty box, but they were the first at such an affordable price to really hit the market.
For $10 a month, 4-7 deluxe beauty and lifestyle samples are delivered to your door. You take a little beauty survey when you sign up that helps them choose samples they think you would most enjoy. Birchbox is always fantastic for trying new up-and-coming brands, as well as some higher-end. I still use this subscription as a way to "try before I buy" because it's truly set up to be exactly that.
What's the Points System?
Each box you get contains a random number of samples, however the average amount is usually 5. When you receive your box, you can try out the products, and then go on the Birchbox website and review them. Birchbox awards 10 points per review, which is equal to $1 to spend in their shop. So at the end of it all, you're spending $10 on a box, and getting $5 or more dollars back in credit on their site. This pays off big when you find a product you really love and want to buy a full size. More often then not, you can pick it up for free with the points you've earned over time.
Each month has a different theme, and this month it was "Fanfare."

From Birchbox
Whether you're excited about blockbuster season, geeking out about fall TV premieres, or searching for a new soundtrack, everyone has a fan in hem. This month, we're sharing our passions-and we want you to share yours! Use the card in this month's box to broadcast your favorite show/book/movie/musician to the interwebs. Here's to an entertaining month!

1. ModelCo: Party Proof Lipstick in "Kitty"
This is a hydrating, semi-matte lipstick in a nude/pink shade. This was the product I chose as my sample choice this month, and I am very pleased! I love the color; It's super neutral but also has that pop of pink that makes it fun, without being too crazy. It's a great shade for work, or for just running around doing errands.

 2. Dr. Brandt: Pores No More Vacuum Cleaner
This product was interesting to me, because I'm always on the prowl for a product that helps clean and shrink my pores. I have very large pores on my nose in particular. This product is easy enough to use: simply spread it on the areas that need treatment and rinse after 5-10 minutes. It suggests using this product 2-3 times a week. I used it 3 times over the course of the week and I saw absolutely no improvement in regards to pore size or amount of blackheads, which is a shame. I really wanted to love this! I suppose my search continues.

3. Sage and Fasten: Onward Roll-on Perfume
This poor guy never stood a chance. When I opened my Birchbox, it REEKED of perfume. I realized right away that not only did I receive a perfume this month (eh...) but it also leaked all over my entire box. Luckily it was packaged in a cardboard pillow pack so the leak was relatively well-contained. The scent is grapefruit, green apple and lemon, which I found way too overpowering, and totally inappropriate for the season. This is something I would expect to see in a spring or summer box, but not one in October. I didn't even bother contact Birchbox about the leaked perfume because I really disliked the scent.

4. Camille Beckman: Tuscan Honey Glycerine Hand Therapy
I am all too familiar with Camille Beckman. Not to far from where I grew up, there's a restaurant called Wrights Chicken Farm. If you live in MA or RI, you've probably been there, or at least heard of it. Back when I was younger, they carried this brand in their gift shop. They may still carry it, although I haven't seen it around in years until the creams started appearing in Birchbox. At the gift shop, I remembered the dozens of "try me" jars topped with tacky, fake flowers. While I always tested out the lotions, I never purchased one. I'm convinced that my love for good packaging stems from my never-ending hatred for the Camille Beckman jars. It looks like they used an address stamp for the logo, and the fake flower glued on top...I just can't.
Now I have actually tried the Tuscan Honey lotion before and it smells quite nice, but a product has to wow me all-around to save itself from the give away pile. Unfortunately for Camille Beckman, that's where most of her products end up.

5. Beauty Blender + Deluxe Solid Cleanser
*Cue the angel harps!*
Did I seriously just get a beauty blender in my Birchbox? Did it also come with a mini solid cleanser? My brain cannot wrap itself around this awesomeness!
I love Beauty Blender sponges. I spent years of my life scoffing at people who would spend over $20 for a makeup sponge, and rolling my eyes at anyone who told me how amazing they were. I am now one of those people. Seriously, these are the best makeup sponges you will ever use in your life. They work best with foundations that have a middle of the road consistency. Not to mousse-y, and not too liquid-y. you start by wetting the sponge and wringing it out, making it double in size. Once you've dotted your foundation or BB cream on your skin, use the beauty blender in a stippling motion (patting it, rather than wiping it across your face) and you'll be truly blown away at the perfect, airbrush finish this sponge helps you achieve!

Overall Thoughts
I have very mixed thoughts on this Birchbox. On the one hand, I got a leaked, stinky perfume, a hideous hand cream and a pore cream that doesn't work. Yet on the other, I got an amazing lipstick in a flattering shade as well as a beauty blender and solid cleanser! I feel very happy about this box, so clearly those two samples alone made up for the mediocrity in the other products. Definitely not the best or worst Birchbox I've ever received, but more than worth the $10 price tag!

You can also use any of the following codes at checkout to give you an extra 100 points ($10) at sign up!  (Some of these may not work anymore, but give them a try!)

  1. You got a way better box than mine and I'm so jealous of that Beauty Blender!!

    1. I would have been happy with just the beauty blender! LOL I do love the lipstick but I wasn't really digging anything else in my box this month. I know a lot of people had worse boxes though, so I'm not complaining! :)

  2. It sucks that your perfume leaked! I liked the scent, but I 100% agree that it feels like more of a spring/summer fragrance. Getting a Beauty Blender in the box is pretty awesome though!

    1. My mom loved the scent, so I gave her my half-leaked one, but she says she's saving it for spring. I agree though- the Beauty Blender makes up for ANY other sample that could have been in there!

  3. Woohoo!!! The beauty blender totally makes up for stinky perfume and chicken farm hand lotion!! :D Jackpot!

    1. HUGE jackpot! LOL Seriously my current beauty blender seriously needs to be thrown away but I've been holding on to it for dear life so this one was a welcome surprise!
