Birchbox Man December 2014 Review and Unboxing

December's Birchbox Man actually showed up at the end of November, and I've been so busy that I almost completely forgot it existed in the first place! Luckily, Birchbox sent me a "choose your sample" e-mail for January, which reminded me that this review had to go up. Jeff and I both forgot to pick a sample for the December box, so we were nervous as to what kind of lifestyle item Birchbox would include. We were crossing our fingers for no boxers, but for something nice and useful this season.

If you're unaware, Birchbox Man is a men's lifestyle and grooming subscription box that costs $20 per month. While the women's Birchbox is only $10 per month, the men's box tends to have more lifestyle products such as clothing, electronics, gadgets etc.

For some reason, Jeff's December box didn't come with an info card, so I had to look up the deets on each product via the Birchbox website.

Number 4: Volumizing Shampoo And Conditioner
English Laundry: Notting Hill Eau de Parfum
I've actually received this Number 4 Shampoo and Conditioner in my Birchbox before, so I kind of know the deal on these. They're volumizing, have a nice smell, and get the job done. I don't find them particularly mind-blowing in the results department, but since Jeff isn't picky with his haircare products, he was more than happy to use these up. Plus, what guy doesn't want more volume to their hair?
The English Laundy "Notting Hill" cologne is actually quite nice. This is a woody/citrus scent, and I think is one of the nicer ones that has been included in BB Man so far. Admittedly, I'm starting to get a little tired of getting constant cologne samples in Birchbox Man. Luckily, Jeff doesn't seem to be bothered by it. Unlike the women's Birchbox, the men's profile doesn't allow you to opt out of frequent inclusion of fragrance. It's not that I really mind getting them but since the men's box is twice as expensive, I don't like getting something that I can grab at Sephora for free.

Ernest Supplies: Awake and Exfoliate Body Bar
Heroes and Aristocrats by Royal Apothic: Ultra Shave Cream Gel
I've got to say that Jeff's favorite grooming product this month was hands down this Ernest Supplies body bar. He loves bar soaps, and this one sloughs off dead skin using coconut shells and lava rock. It has an invigorating citrus scent and is infused with caffeine. Jeff used this right away and kept telling me how much he was enjoying it. I thought he smelled amazing after using this! My only complaint is that a small bar of this soap costs $15! Ouch.
Jeff doesn't use shaving creams (he uses the solid puck and a badger brush) so he always passes the shaving creams/gels etc that he gets down to me. I got through shaving creams like water, so I'm always excited to have a new one. This "Heroes and Aristocrats" shaving cream by Royal Apothic is pretty standard. I've already finished the tube since it's about 2-3 uses on my legs. It's a bit thicker as it's supposed to be a facial cream, but I don't think it wowed me or made me feel like I needed to rush out and get a full size. Not bad, though!

Naadam Cashmere Speer Beanie
There’s more than one way to reinvent a classic. Using top-quality cashmere from the Mongolian steppes, Naadam has transformed a winter essential into a pure manifestation of warmth. Slip it on your head when the weather gets cold, and you may never want to take it off.
The lifestyle item in the boxes this month was able to be chosen by the subscriber, however Jeff and I never got the memo, and somehow missed the cutoff. We decide to let the Birchbox Gods be our guide and choose a lifestyle sample for us. By the way, I say "us" because Jeff usually lets me pick for him because I'm pretty good at figuring out what he'll like!
He got SO lucky this time! This beautiful grey cashmere beanie is not only valued at $50 (wow!), but it's ridiculously soft and luxurious. It fits incredibly well and is the first beanie that Jeff has actually liked. So happy that we didn't end up picking a sample, as this beanie might be the nicest thing he's received in BB Man thus far!

Overall Thoughts
I'm personally always pleased with the value of Birchbox Man, and as a regular Birchbox customer, I already know I'm impressed with their customer service. The one time Jeff was unhappy with his box (we received 2 different brands of boxer briefs 2 months in a row) they refunded the cost of the box in Birchbox points, which we were very happy about.
December was a really great month with a well-rounded box. Hair, body, shave, scent and fashion are all represented here, and by some really nice products! I'd say this box was worth it for the beanie and the soap alone. Overall, Jeff was very happy with this month!

  1. I get Birchbox Man for my husband-and I love that you posted a picture of the box and that I'm not alone in that I ALWAYS END UP SLICING THROUGH THE "BIRCHBOX" WORDS ON THE TOP OF THE BOX!!! You do it too I see from your photo! I just cannot find any way to open up the outer box without slicing through "birchbox" which drives me crazy because when I repurpose the box there is a slice on top! Haha! Funny funny!

    1. hahah OH MY GOSH I am SO glad I'm not the only one who does this LOL. I have been able to avoid it once or twice when I'm ridiculously careful, but I think I do it 9/10 times! I wish they'd put a little piece of protective cardboard there or something!! Especially with these pretty limited edition boxes! When my regular Birchbox finally shows up I'm going to yank the tape off rather than cut it, even if it takes me forever! haha ;)

  2. Omg, you two are hilarious! And I'm starting to get a little jealous of BB Man! I can see I will inevitably end up getting one for my husband. He would love this stuff (although not the boxers... is there an opt out option?). For now he just gets Loot Crate and a Nerd Block or two.
