Dr. Song Professional Teeth Whitening Kit Review

I have something to admit:
I don't take care of my teeth as well as I should.
I spend a lot of my time praising beauty products, the importance of skincare and eating well, however my teeth are the one part of my body that I have done little more than the minimum requirements to keep them healthy. I suppose oral care habits start at a young age, and let me tell you- I had cavities. Lots of em. In fact, I probably have a few now. I spent a lot of time in my adult life not caring about my oral health at all, and now I'm paying the price. I try to brush and floss regularly, and I of course want healthy teeth, but at this stage in the game, I'm just doing what I can until I can afford to shell out the cash to get them fixed up real nice by a dentist. Even with insurance, that stuff is pricey!

I think my major issue is that my teeth are yellow. Horribly and painfully yellow. I never even realized they were as bad as they were until I started researching for this post. I saw the opportunity to review a Dr. Song teeth whitening kit, and I thought, "Hey, beautiful-looking teeth are something that has always alluded me. This product would be a great thing to do a review on!"
Not only have I been trying to erase years of tooth-neglect, I'm trying to erase over a decade of smoking and drinking coffee. A LOT of it. While I'm now a non-smoker, I still drink 3-4 cups of coffee a day. All of these awful habits have made my mouth look less-than-stellar.
I'm almost too embarrassed to show the "before" photo of my teeth. But I'm doing it for you guys...although it'll be much further down in this post as to not blind you right off the bat with hideousness.
The Dr. Song Home Professional Teeth Whitening Kit is a pro kit that gives you the ability to whiten your teeth at home without emptying your pockets at the dentists office. This kit is only $34.99 on Amazon, and contains over 50 applications, which is huge! There are no instructions included with this kit, although when you make the purchase from Amazon, they send you a detailed e-mail with directions, which are also available on their website: Dr. Song Medical.

The Kit:
The kit comes with the following items:
-8 Syringes of whitening gel: Each syringe comes with 3ml of product, and you will need .5ml for each application. (6 applications per syringe)
-LED Tray Light: Optional to use, but helps speed up the whitening process.
-3 Moldable Teeth Trays: These can be heated and molded to custom-fit your teeth
-Applicator Brush: Rather than squeezing the gel into the trays, it is applied directly to the teeth with the applicator brush, then the trays go over it.

Since this is a powerful whitening kit, Dr. Song also sells a "Remineralization Kit" for $9.99 for people with sensitive teeth:
This Kit includes 8 syringes (also good for 50 treatments) that are used after whitening treatments. They help desensitize teeth, restore minerals and strengthen enamel with sodium fluoride an potassium nitrate.

So let's take a look at how this is all done:

Preparing the Trays:
(this is to get them customer-fitted to your mouth. This only needs to be done once to get them to shape to your mouth)

Step 1:
Place the tray over the upper teeth without placing the tray in boiling water. Practice with your tongue on the roof of your mouth and touching the inside of the tray. Suck the air from the tray. This contours the guard to the inside surface of the teeth. Repeat with lower tray.

Step 2:
Bring water to a boil. Pour the water into a cup and let sit for 1 minute. Dip the tray into the water for 5 seconds. Make sure the edges do not fold onto each other (occurs when dipped for too long, if this happens, reshape tray back to original form, allow to cool and try again).

Step 3:
Lift the tray vertically from the water using the tab. Carefully and quickly place the tray around the teeth and then immediately perform the procedure outlined in step 1.

Step 4:
The tray can be reformed multiple times by dipping them again into hot water, repeat until satisfied.

Step 5:
Once you are satisfied with the fit, trim the front tab away from the tray with scissors.

Once you've shaped your trays, you're ready to go with the treatment!

Whitening Treatment:

Step 1:
Brush and floss just prior to bleaching your teeth

Step 2:
Dispense .5 ml of gel into a small bowl and using the applicator brush, apply a thin layer of gel to the front teeth only, making sure the gel stays away from the gums. Do not whiten the back teeth, since no one can see them.

Step 3:
Insert whitening trays in the mouth over the teeth. Immediately wipe any excess gel off of the gums.
Optional:
You can use the LED tray light by placing it over your trays and use it for 15 minutes at the start of each session.

Step 4:
Wear the trays for 15 minutes and up to 4 hours if a stronger treatment is desired. If sensitivity or irritation occurs, wait 24 hours between treatments and use less gel. Repeat process daily until you reach the desired shade. You may wear longer if you experience no tooth sensitivity.

Step 5:
Gently remove any excess gel that remains on the teeth and gums to prevent any possible irritation.

And that's it! It seems a bit complicated at first, but after the first time you do it, it becomes much easier.
Dr. Song says that this process can be done twice a day for 15 minutes each time, however you might want to cut down to once a day or once every other day if your teeth are very sensitive.

If you happen to use the remineralization gel (like I did) they application is done after whitening. Simply brush your teeth so they are clean, and apply the remineralization gel directly into the trays. Apply the trays to your teeth and press gently so that the gel covers the teeth, and wipe off any gel that pushes out of the trays. You can wear this for 30 minutes-4 hours, depending on how sensitive your teeth are. Dr. Song also approves wearing this gel overnight if needed, and recommends cleaning the trays thoroughly before using the again.

Results
OK, so this is really the stuff that matters, right? Here is my teeth before using the Dr. Song whitening treatment. Fair warning: My mouth is crooked and grimacing because I was trying to show as much of my teeth as possible.

BEFORE
Ick, I know. The yellowness and the crookedness...ahhh I can't even look!

I used the Dr. Song whitening gel once per day for 15 minutes each session.
Shortly after whitening, I would use the remineralization gel for about 1-2 hours.
I did this daily for the past 2 weeks and truly achieved fantastic results! The best part about this is: I only used 14 treatments and this kit has enough for 50!

Here's a picture of my teeth currently:
AFTER
Like...whaaatttt? Seriously if I hadn't taken the before picture, I never would have believed my teeth whitened this much, especially in such a short period of time. Although I will admit this photo makes them look just a bit whiter than they actually are, it has made a huge difference! It seems like it's working gradually, so I didn't really notice a huge difference until I compared photos. I am SO impressed with this whitening kit. While I have sensitive teeth, I had very minimal issues: just some slight tingling around the gum line where the gel had touched. I think the reminieralization gel helped with that a great deal. I'm going to continue using this product for another week or so, and then keep the rest aside until it's needed again. It's only a matter of time before my coffee addiction screws up these pearly whites!

PROS:
Huge amount of product (up to 50 applications)
At Home Treatment with professional results
Low cost (same price or less than crest white strips)

CONS
Drooling. So much drooling.
Application can be difficult with the tiny brush provided.
Application in general is a long process. Set aside some time at night to do this.
LED light batteries didn't last very long (about 10 applications)

If you're interested in picking up this whitening kit, it comes highly recommended by me. I'm not sure if it will work this well for everyone (my teeth were ridiculously yellow) but I am SO impressed and will definitely pick up more of this when I eventually run out. I achieved such a great result and for less money than the Crest White Strips! You can buy the kit HERE, and the Remineralization Kit HERE.

Care Directions:
Keep in a cool, dark place, away from sunlight when not in use.
LED light: make sure to remove the clear plastic safety disk in the battery compartment before using. The light is optional, but can speed up the process. Going slowly and achieving results in the long run is the best way. Keep the use of gel to a minimum, less is more. Do not wear the trays for too long, especially if you are not sure how sensitive you are.
Keep the gel away from your gums as they may irritate them/cause temporary bleaching of gums.
Whitening Gel Ingredients:
carbamide peroxide, water, glycerin, carbomer, potassium sorbate, disodium EDTA, flavor
Remineralization Gel Ingredients:
Ingredients: Water, Alcohol, Polysorbate 20, Carbomer, Potassium Sorbate, Potassium Nitrate, Mentha Piperita Oil, Dicalcium Phosphate Dihydrate, Dicalcium Phosphate, Flouride

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

  1. Wow, those results are AMAZING! I've been using a different whitening treatment lately and it's working, but I don't think the results are that pronounced. Impressive!
