Paula Dorf Aztec City Eyeshadow Palette and Teal Lash Color Review! Coupon Code for Free Mascara!

When I got the chance to review this awesome Paula Dorf palette, I seriously couldn't wait! I've been hearing about Paula Dorf, the famous makeup artist, since I can remember, and her makeup is something I've never gotten around to trying. Not to mention, I have been determined to get more beauty on the blog and less subscription boxes! One day at a time... (*stares at pile of Memeboxes in the corner of my room)
The palette I received to review is the Paula Dorf Aztec City Palette. I also received a Teal Lash Color Mascara as well. Teal is one of my favorite colors, and I've never had a colored mascara before, (I know, crazy!) so I couldn't wait to give it a go!

From the desert sand to the crisp blue sky this Aztec City Palette has it all! With just the right balance of professional and flirty, this palette lets you decide between knockout nudes, classy colors or a mesmerizing mix of both. These five shades allow you to customize your look and transform your mindset to the bronzed beauty of the desert. The sleek mirrored case also contains a specially designed double-ended brush for the perfect application. For a more dramatic effect, use with Paula Dorf Transformer.

 Ingredients
Mica & Dimethicone, Talc & Dimethicone, Dimethicone, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Magnesium Stearate, Solum Diatomeae, Capryl Glycol & Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Piroctone Olamine.  May contain (+/-):  ci 77019 & ci 77891, ci 77742, ci 77288, ci 77491, ci 77492, ci 77499.

This palette contains 5 full-sized eye shadows, a double-ended brush, and a mirror.
The compact is slim, sturdy and feel well-made. I like that there is an included mirror as well, since it makes it quite travel-friendly! It has a snap-closure, not magnetic, which also ensures shadows won't be damage when traveling.
While most palettes (even Naked Palettes, I've noticed!) have a terrible brush, this one actually isn't bad! the regular brush end applies shadow nicely, although it lacks density. It will give a lighter, more natural effect in application, so if you like your shadow to be a bit more bold I would suggest getting a more dense, flatter brush so that you can really pack on the color! The other end is an angled liner brush, which is great for applying shadows on the lower lid, or lining the eye with a deeper shade of shadow for a natural liner look.
Here's a bit of a closer look at the shades. These shadows do not have names, so I've made some up on my own to better explain the colors!
From Left to Right:
Off-White - (Shimmer/Pearl) This is a perfect shade for highlighting the brow bone and blending out any harsh lines. I think it's essential to have a lighter shade like this in every palette for that purpose. There is a pearly shimmer to this shade, although there is no micro-glitter.
Aqua Blue - (Shimmer/Shift) This is an absolutely gorgeous aqua blue that has a light green-gold shift to it. It photographs blue, but depending on how the light hits it, it can also look golden-green. It's absolutely stunning!
Beige-Pink - (Satin/Glitter) This is a pale pink shade with hint of beige. I'd say it's a "muted pink." It does have a slight satin finish, as well as small flecks of silver micro-glitter. It's very wearable, though. No disco-looking eyes for you!
Light Brown - (Matte/Satin) I say that this shade and the last one are both matte/satins because they do appear matte, but they have a bit of a sheen to them once swatched/applied. This is great shade to apply all over the lid to give some natural contour without looking like you're wearing shadow.
Dark Brown - (Matte/Satin) This is another matte shade that has a bit of a sheen when applied. This makes for a fantastic crease shade, or could also be used as a liner.

Performance
These shadows are great quality. The swatches I did were with no primer, and using my own shadow brush. I found that they applied smoothly and evenly with little to no fallout, which is amazing! All the shades are beautifully pigmented and feel soft and buttery, not at all dried out or powdery. The only shade I feel needed a tiny bit more oomph is the light brown, however I think it's still a great "all over the lid" shade.

This palette mixes some must-have neutrals as well as a pop of color that is great for someone who might not be totally comfortable wearing bright shades. This way, you can introduce this really beautiful blue/green in  subtle, or more dramatic way. A fun idea is to do a classic eye look with the browns and pearly highlight, and then line your lower lid with the bright blue for that really gorgeous pop!

This teal color, smudge-proof mascara conditions, thickens and lengthens to create beautiful flake-proof lashes. Water-resistant formula gentle enough to be worn with contact lenses.

Ingredients
Water, Propylene Glycol, Beeswax, Ethyl Ester of Pvm/Ma Copolymer, Glyceryl Stearate, Peg-100 Stearate, Pvp, Kaolin, Stearic Acid, Triethanolamine, Copernicia Cerifera (carnauba) Wax, Cetyl Alcohol, Magnesium, Aluminum Silicate, Simethicone, Phenoxethanol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Trisodium Edta. May Contain: Iron Oxides, Titanium Dioxide, Ultramarines, Chromium Hydroxide Green.
I've always been slightly off-put by colored mascaras. They just seem like they would make my lashes look smaller, or hinder an eye look in general, but I have definitely been tempted to try one out. As I mentioned, teal is one of my all-time favorite colors, and I think when done right, it could be a really gorgeous look as a mascara!
I was having a hard time getting a swatch of this, as no matter how many pictures I took of it on my eyes, it looked black. So...here's a swatch on my notebook! However, in person, it's is clearly a deep teal shade. I love that this isn't a bright or chalky-looking teal, but more of a black/teal that can be used in conjunction with a blue/green eye look to enhance it overall.
What ends up happening is that instead of your lashes looking obviously colored, it kind of helps the "wow factor" of a blue/green shadow and pulls the look together nicely!

The formula of this mascara is actually quite nice. It's not too thick or too thin, and the classic bristle brush does a great job of separating the lashes and keeping clumps at bay. It is also water-resistant, which I prefer to waterproof because it stays on just as long, but is much easier to wash off at the end of the day. I had no irritation after using this, nor did the mascara have an offensive smell, which can often be the case with other macaras I have tried. While this doesn't intensely lengthen or volumize the lashes, it does make them more pronounced, and of course, teal!
Overall Thoughts
I think this palette and mascara are a really nice way to introduce more color into your eye looks, as well as have a little fun trying something different without stepping too far out of your comfort zone. There's lots of great looks to be had here, especially if you're an aqua/teal fan like I am! The quality of these products is lovely, and I'm actually excited that I finally got to try the Paula Dorf brand. I've already been eyeing some of the lipsticks (especially the lip color sheet tints!) so I think Paula Dorf has earned a new fan!

  1. I like the names you've given them. "Beige-pink" looks lavender on my skin though... it's the weirdest thing, because in the pan it totally looks taupe-ish/pink-ish to me.

    1. aw man I WISH it looked lavender on me! I have green eyes so I'm always loving the purples. It's an interesting color though- even if it looks a bit boring in the pan. I can definitely see how it would look different on varying skin tones!

    1. You're welcome Marcey! I wasn't expecting too much from the brand as I tend to be weary of ANY makeup that I haven't heard a ton about. However I think the Paula Dorf brand will be a new favorite like Tarina Tarantino- another fantastic makeup brand if you haven't had a chance to try it yet! I love finding new makeup lines to try out! :)
