Birchbox February 2015 Review and Unboxing

Another month, another Birchbox unboxing! I cannot believe it's almost the end of February- it feels like I just finished my January reviews, yet here I am already scrambling to get February finished!
It feels like I've been subscribed to Birchbox for ages...I can barely remember a time when I didn't get these boxes each month!  Out of curiosity, I just checked my account and discovered that I got my very first Birchbox in May 2011! Wow. That is a long time! It hasn't always been a positive experience when it comes to the selection of samples I receive, but I have always found their customer service to be some of the best in the business, and their points system is truly the best available. I am completely transparent when I say: I probably wouldn't have stayed subscribed for so long if they didn't have the point system they do!

What's Birchbox?
If you're unfamiliar with Birchbox, they are one of the reasons why subscription boxes are such a huge deal! They weren't the first beauty box, but they were one of the first, and definitely the original low-cost beauty box to hit the market.
For $10 a month, 4-7 deluxe beauty and lifestyle samples are delivered to your door. You take a little beauty survey when you sign up that helps them choose samples they think you would most enjoy. Birchbox is always fantastic for trying new up-and-coming brands, as well as some higher-end. I still use this subscription as a way to "try before I buy" because it's truly set up to be exactly that.

What's the Points System?
Each box you get contains a random number of samples, however the average amount is usually 5. When you receive your box, you can try out the products, and then go on the Birchbox website and review them. Birchbox awards 10 points per review, which is equal to $1 to spend in their shop. So at the end of it all, you're spending $10 on a box, and getting $5 or more dollars back in credit on their site. This pays off big when you find a product you really love and want to buy a full size. More often then not, you can pick it up for free with the points you've earned over time.

Each month has a different theme, and this month it was "Friendship."

From Birchbox:
Calling all buddies, pals, partners-in-crime, and BFFs. February may be about a certain romance-focused holiday, but we're just as thrilled to celebrate those people who cheer us on, calm us down, and-most importantly- make us laugh so hard we cry. Here's to friendship, in all it's incredible forms!
This month's box was a painfully bright coral with pink word bubbles all over it. I'm loving the new and interesting boxes each month instead of their regular brown boxes. They're so fun to reuse for gifts or for storage!
Marcelle: Gentle Makeup Remover For Sensitive Eyes
Each month, Birchbox gives you the option to choose a sample for your box, and this was the product I chose. Weirdly enough, the other sample options ended up in my box as well, so I guess I ended up with all of them anyway! This is a hypoallergenic makeup remover not only gets rid of stubborn waterproof eye makeup, but it goes on to diminish dark circles and under eye puffiness! I love a good multitasking product! The reviews of this product are oustanding across the board, so I have a feeling I'm going to love it!

Parlor by Jeff Chastain: Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray
This sea salt spray is exclusive to Birchbox, and when spritzed in the hair, gives you soft, beachy waves. A lot of people don't like the scent of this, but I thought it was amazing. The description says it's a scent of peach, fresh cut grass and white woods. I'd say that's pretty accurate, but it's also a sea salt spray, so you can definitely smell the salt water in there as well. It just reminds me of the beach in a good way. Really like this stuff!
Harvey Prince: Ageless Perfume
I don't love getting perfume samples in my Birchboxes, but I was pleasantly surprised with this one! I do love quite a few of the Harvey Prince scents, but this one I was worried about because I usually prefer orientals and musks over light and fruity notes. The nice thing about this perfume is that it not only has a light grapefruit scent, but it has a dry down of sandalwood, making it have a light musk quality that I love. What is really cool about this perfume is that the designers used olfactory research to develop this fragrance, which is perfectly calibrated to cover the pheromones of aging skin to make you smell more youthful. I have no idea if it works, but I love a good gimmick!

Laura Geller: Glam Lash- Dramatic Volumizing Mascara
This is actually one of my favorite mascaras, so I'm happy to have a travel size! It applies beautifully without major clumpage, and really gives great volume to your lashes with pigmented color and very little to no flaking. The length that this mascara can give is a real big seller for me- not many mascaras can beat this one in the length department!

theBalm Cosmetics: Read My Lips Lip Gloss in "Bam" (Rose Pink)
I didn't swatch this because I'm going to be giving it away, as I've tried this gloss before and I'm not a fan. I used to wear lip gloss on a daily basis in high school. I would reach for a good gloss rather than a lipstick almost every time. As I've gotten older, I find myself wearing lip gloss very rarely, if ever. This particular gloss has kind of a sticky formula that doesn't feel very comfortable on my lips. I really do love theBalm, but this isn't one of their better products.
Overall Thoughts
This box is miles and miles ahead of last month in terms of quality and curation. I think these items fit my profile much better, and I especially love the variety. While I'd normally like to see more skincare in my boxes, I'm overloaded with skincare lately, so I'm interesting in trying things outside of that category. This box fit the bill perfectly, so I couldn't be happier. The only product I won't be using is the lip gloss, but I know plenty of ladies who would love to have it, so finding it a good home won't be a problem. It's rare these days that I get a Birchbox filled with products I'm actually interested in using, but this one accomplished that for me. Very happy with it overall!
Next month is my birthday month, so I am crossing all my fingers and toes that my box blows me away! I'm always hoping for a slew of amazing boxes during my birthday month!

  1. I picked the Parlor product during sample selection and I really like it, but I am one of the people who didn't care for the scent. I think it smells like the adhesive part of a Band-Aid, lol. It works really well though, so I can forgive the smell!

    1. hahah omgosh that description is too much! ;) You're definitely not the first person that said it had a weird smell- Maybe some of the batches have different amounts of fragrance in them? Mine is clearly a green/grassy floral scent with that sea salt undertone. It's really nice!
Either way, i like you said, it works amazingly well- so if I get another bottle and it smells like bandaids...I'll have to use some essential oils or something to cover it up haha :)

  2. I picked the Parlor item amid test choice and I truly like it, however I am one of the general population who couldn't have cared less for the fragrance.
