Petunia Skincare 1.0mm Derma Roller Review! (Bonus Reviews: Eye Serum and Hyaluronic Acid/ Vitamin C Serum)

Have you ever examined your skin in the mirror and thought, "Gee, my skin looks pretty good, but it would look even better if I rolled a bunch of needles all over my face!"
No? Yea, me first. I've put starfish extract, snail secretion, bee venom and a slew of other weird things on my skin without a second thought. I've rubbed cocoons on my face to naturally exfoliate- heck I even have a bird poop face mask on my amazon wishlist. Once you're deep in the Korean skincare game, interesting or weird ingredients are pretty standard.
I've avoided looking at or thinking about any kind of strange beauty tools or treatments until recently when I was scrolling through Amazon. I window shop Amazon whenever I'm bored and need to discover new things to add to my never-ending wishlist! A Derma Roller popped up on my screen, and while I had heard of the concept before I really had no idea what it was all about. Of course when I got the opportunity to review one from Petunia Skincare, I couldn't resist. I was super curious to find out what this was all about, if it actually worked, and well...if it hurt!

What Is Derma Rolling?
A derma roller is essentially a little spinning disc of surgical grade needles. These needles are essentially rolled over your face (or other parts of the body) with light pressure to achieve small pin holes in the skin. Why would you do such a thing? The claim is that puncturing these holes in the skin improves the look and feel of skin over a period of regular use by stimulating collagen production and healing, but they also claim to help skincare products absorb better into the skin.

What Will a Derma Roller Do for My Skin?
- Firmer and thicker skin
- Helps smooth facial and acne scars
- Stimulates collagen and elastin production
- Helps with scar removal and fading stretch marks and pigmentation
- Diminishes the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines
- Can be used on any part of the skin
- Creates multi micro-channels in the skin, allowing products more able to penetrate into the skin at a deeper level

Skin Issues the Derma Roller Will Treat:
- Superficial acne scarring
- Deep scars and stretch marks
- Sagging skin
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Cellulite
- Large pores
- Hyperpigmentation
- Lax Skin & Elasticity

The derma roller! It is was a lot less scary-looking once I had it in my hands. I've gotta say my epilator strikes more fear into my heart than this little needle-covered wand does!
A Closer look at the needles. A little bit scarier close up, but still nothing I can't handle!
The 540 1mm needles on the Petunia Skincare derma roller head are medical-grade, and are specially sterilized to ensure that they glide safely across the surface of the skin while creating the tiny micro channels that open up your pores to help your skincare products absorb better. They are made from stainless steel, which is ideal for this process. Why?
- It's strong and the best material for this type of process
- The gold standard has always been surgical stainless steel
- Used by tattooists, doctors, surgeons and acupuncturists
- Stainless steel offers the least reactions to the skin
The derma roller is actually tinier than I expected it to be, but it fits quite comfortably in my hand, which is good. I don't want to have a bad grip on something that essentially stabbing me in the face thousands of times!

How to Derma Roll!
Cleanse Your Face
1. Before you use your Derma Roller for the first time, make sure that you first thoroughly cleanse your face with your favorite facial wash and then dry off. You can leave the toning and moisturizing for after the micro-needling therapy.

Rinse Derma Roller
2. Rinse the Derma Roller under hot running water before using it on your skin. This ensures that the needles are disinfected again just before use.

Optional: Numbing Cream
3. If you find it painful to derma roll, you may use a numbing cream of some sort to help you deal with the sensation of having your skin pricked. While this is usually not a very painful process, some people may have more sensitivity on the skin or are nervous about the entire idea. Having a numbing agent on hand will help! Even so, it is recommended that you needle the skin 1-2 ties before applying the numbing cream to speed up the absorption process. Leave the cream on the skin for about 10 minutes and then rinse and dry the skin off.

Roll on!
4. You're ready to roll! (pun intended) Using even pressure, roll the needle head across the skin going in one directions from left to right, top to bottom. Roll in each direction 10 times for optimal results. While treating the face, avoid too much pressure around the eye area and cheekbones.

Continue with Skincare
5. After you've completed the derma rolling process, apply a good quality face serum and leave it on your skin for 10-15 minutes to fully absorb. After this, you should apply your moisturizer. It is recommended to wait at least an hour (or more) for your pores to close up before using any makeup products.

6. Remember to wash your derma roller under hot running water after every treatment session. I would also recommend soaking it in an alcohol bath for a few minutes as well to make sure it is as clean as possible.

Petunia Skincare Suggests the Following Cleaning Process:
   1.  Pour rubbing alcohol into roller container and submerge roller. Let both, roller and container, disinfect in the alcohol for 5 minutes.
    2. Pour out rubbing alcohol and run container and roller under hot water.
    3. Fill sink with hot water, add a tablespoon of bleach, then place roller and container in. Leave for 5 minutes. ( I don't think this is an absolutely necessary step unless you are prone to infections, but hey- do it up if you want. I'm not super fussy with mine and my skin hasn't fallen off yet!)
    4. Take roller and container out, rinse with cold water, and then dry it off. Place roller back in container.

Can you Derma Roll Too Often?
It is recommended to use the derma roller every 4-6 weeks for the face and every 2-4 weeks for the body.
Needling your skin too often will not give you better results. Similarly, like when you cut your finger, it takes time to heal. The tiny wounds created by the derma roller during skin needling also need time to heal and build collagen. Even when they are much smaller than a regular cut, there is still time needed for your body to go through the natural healing process.

How Long Until I See Results?
Most sources say that it takes a couple of months to start seeing the results of derma rolling. Since it is suggested that you only do this once a month, it seems that after 2-3 sessions, you might start to see some payoff.

My Experience
I'm not going to lie- after I got the derma roller, I let it sit there in the packaging for a good week before finally getting up the courage to use it. I wasn't scared necessarily, it was more the worry that it would cause my skin to look inflamed or irritated. More importantly, you are not supposed to use a derma roller over acne, and there is rarely a time where there isn't a spot somewhere on my face.

Even so, last week we had some pretty intense snowfall here in the Northeast, so I decided to use that time away from work wisely and give the Derma Roller a try. I wanted to try rolling without a numbing agent first, so I could get a better idea of the pain level we're looking at. To be completely honest, as long as your applying appropriate pressure, the pain is minimal. If you wince at the thought of plucking your eyebrows or waxing your legs, I would suggest using a numbing cream for your own comfort level. I'm not saying it didn't feel uncomfortable, but it wasn't bad enough where I felt like I needed something to dull the pain.
By the end of the rolling process, my skin did start to feel a little "raw" which may have been the most painful part. I say give it a try on your forehead, or even somewhere on your body first to give you a better idea of your pain tolerance. In a nutshell- it's bearable.

After rolling, I used the Petunia Skincare Hyaluronic Acid Serum and Eye Cream (reviews on those below!) as well as a gentle moisturizer. I didn't want to dump too many of my 10+ skincare products on my face, considering everything absorbs better after rolling. I can say my skin is very pale and redness is common on my face, so there was some definite irritation and redness after this process, however using the serum and moisturizer seemed to calm it quite a bit. I think there was some redness on my cheeks and forehead for most of the day after using the roller in the mid-morning. By the time I went to bed that evening, my skin looked as if I hadn't done anything to it at all- which is good to know when I'm scheduling a session around work days.

None to speak of-yet. I have only used the derma roller one time on my face, and it was last week. I would have loved to give it more time so I could let you guys know what the long-terms results are, however this product was provided to me for review, and I was required to get it finished by a certain time. Womp.
I didn't notice any changes in my acne scarring or stretch marks (I did use this on my body as well) and to be honest, I didn't really feel as if my skincare products "absorbed better" either.
I haven't completely written off derma rolling by any means, I have seen some amazing results through other bloggers and youtubers, and it's way too early in my testing to really know how it changes and benefits my skin. I plan on continuing to use this for the next few months in hopes that results will start to become more apparent.

For your consideration, I'm also leaving this link to a Paula's Choice article about Derma Rolling. During my research on the subject, I've seen some great reviews/results from bloggers and positive articles about the process, but I do want to share some differing opinions on the subject so you can get a clear picture before you decide if this is right for you to try.

Petunia Skincare Revitalize Eye Serum
Eye creams and serums tote a lot of promises: dark circles and puffiness are eliminated! Fine lines will disappear! etc etc. However, I have rarely come across and eye cream that does anything more than moisturize my eyes. There have been exceptions, however, and this eye cream is surprisingly one of them.

Superior Formulation
Our eye serum is unlike any eye cream on the market. Most eye creams are thick, oily and take forever to be absorbed into the skin. We have formulated our eye serum to be lightweight with a plush and silky texture. It is easily absorbed into the skin and dries instantaneously leaving your eyes literally revitalized as have added caffeine to provide instant relief for the feeling of heavy and tired eyes.

Diminishes Dark Circles, Puffiness and Swollen Eyes
Infused with powerful and proven antioxidants, such as Hesperidin Methyl Chalcone, Alpha Bisabolol, Vitamin C + B3 and Caffeine, specifically targeted to reduce dark circles under the eyes and treat puffy and swollen eyes.

Used twice daily, Petunia Skincare's Revitalize Eye Serum will repair and protect the delicate areas around the eyes.  This eye serums comes in a pump container, which I absolutely love. There is nothing worse than digging into a jar of eye cream. I feel like I can control the amount of product I get much easier with a pump-top, plus it helps avoid any foreign particles or bacteria getting in there!
This serum is gel-like in texture, and has a yellow semi-translucent appearance. It has a very faint herbal-like scent, but it's barely detectable and dissipates as soon as it absorbs into the skin. The consistency is lovely, as it glides over the skin under my eyes and absorbs super quickly. One of the major issues I've had with eye creams is that they tend to feel heavy, or hang around on my eyes a bit too long. Even worse- some eye creams have made my already oily lids even more oily, which is no bueno. This serum feels magical on my eyes. Seriously. So nice. If you have dryness issues around your eyes, I would suggest using a light eye cream or moisturizer over this serum, however that would be total overkill for me personally.

This serum is loaded with fantastic ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, caffeine, grape seed oil, natural marine collagen, pomegranate extract and more. So not only does it feel good and absorb quickly, it actually contains the power ingredients behind it to do what it says it will.

I have been using this eye serum for about 2-3 weeks now, and I have to say that it's become a regular part of my skincare routine. Normally, I will try a product for a period of time in order to do a review, and then set it aside and go back to my tried-and-true's. This serum however, really packed a punch in regards to lessening the skin issues around my eyes. I am almost 30, so while I don't have heavy lines around my eyes, I do have the beginnings of crows feet, some serious dark circles and puffiness for days. I'm a blogger and a night owl who never sleeps, so tired-eyes come with the territory. This serum has not eliminated, but noticeably lessened the dark circles under my eyes, and does have a temporary de-puffing effect for me. Since I use it both in the morning and at night, the puffiness stays away for most of the day. I do see it come back with a vengeance when I wake up in the morning, but I'm happy as long as I can control it with this serum.
Moisture-wise, this serum is fantastic for me. The sea kelp component acts as a natural moisturizer, so you should be fine to use this on it's own. As I mentioned above, if you have super-dry skin around your eyes, try using this on it's own at first, and add in a light eye cream on top if necessary.

Sea Kelp Bioferment, Water, Sodium PCA, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Niacinamide (vitamin B3), Alpha Bisabolol, Coconut Endosperm, Natural Active Peptides, Sodium Hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid), Guaiazulene, Hesperidin Methyl Chalcone, Caffeine, Grape Seed Proanthocyanidins, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide, Pomegranate Extract, Carnosine, Carnitine, Tetrahydrocurcuminoids, Natto Gum, Ferulic Acid, Lycopene, Glutathione, Glutaredoxin, Superoxide Dismutase

Petunia Skincare Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C Serum
It's really not hard to please me when it comes to hyaluronic acid serums. Almost every one I have tried has been absolutely fantastic at moisturizing my skin without making me oily, which is a constant concern for me. Since this one also contains Vitamin C, it's one of those products that I immediately gravitated towards. My skin loves both of these ingredients- and I get better results using Vitamin C when it's mixed into a different serum rather than on it's own- it tends to make me break out otherwise.

Petunia Skincare's Professional Hyaluronic Acid Serum, made with the highest quality vegan-free and cruelly-free hyaluronic acid, is the ultimate anti aging and anti wrinkle solution to give you that dewy, elastic, and youthful boost in your skin. Hyaluronic acid binds moisture and water into your skin to help you achieve plump, soft, and tight skin. Fine lines, crows feet and wrinkles are filled in.

As we age, the hyaluronic acid content in our body naturally decreases, and as a result we must build more hyaluronic acid back into the body either through orally or topically. Our serum has been tested thoroughly and has been proven to stimulate the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen.

Hyaluronic acid is the key ingredient in this serum, and we have combined two very important antioxidants: Vitamin C, and Ferulic Acid into our formulation. Hyaluronic acid is responsible for retaining moisture giving you skin's youthful elasticity and plumpness by trapping water in your skin. Vitamin C helps prevent aging of the skin by speeding cell regeneration, repairing free radical damage, and stimulating collagen. Ferulic acid protects the skin by neutralizing free radicals from UVA/UVB rays which would otherwise cause premature aging in the skin.

We use only vegan, and cruelty-free formulations containing natural/organic active ingredients. No parabens, no sulfates, no gluten, no alcohol, no phthalates, and absolutely no animal testing. Our serum is made in the USA in our advanced FDA registered facility.

This serum is housed in an amber-colored bottle with a typical dropper-type applicator. The Amazon page shows a pump applicator, which I would have preferred, so I'm not sure if this dropper is new packaging or old. It's not that I can't manage with this applicator, but when it comes to these thick serums, I find that you can't really pull up the product into the dropper easily, not to mention the serum is so thick that it globs around the outside of the dropper, so you have to be careful that you're not applying too much. I'm not big on applicators that give me little control over how much product I'm applying, so not such a big fan of this bottle. Unfortunately, it's the most common way Hyaluronic Acid serums are packaged, so I deal.
Unlike some other HA serums, this one kind of has a thicker, gel-like consistency, but when it's rubbed into the skin, it absorbs easily and doesn't have a sticky residue. One thing I will note about this serum is that it has a scent to it that is contributed by the ingredient addition of neroli. It's a little sweet, a little herby, but subtle and non-offensive to me. I did notice that in other reviews, this was a turnoff for some people who were sensitive to scents, so keep that in mind!

The best part about this serum is that it contains so few ingredients! Other than some preservatives, you're only getting the good stuff and not a bunch of chemicals and fillers which are unfortunately all too common in skincare these days.

I've been using this serum along with the eye serum in my regular skincare routine, and I've been enjoying it! I don't think it's necessarily any better or more amazing than past Hyaluronic Acid serums I've used, but I don't want that statement to take away from how nice this serum is. I'm simply pointing out that many HA serums have a similar effect and result on my skin. I actually kind of prefer this one to most of the ones I currently have due to the neroli water. I actually really enjoy the scent! I find this serum to be very moisturizing, and it makes my skin feel silky-soft. I would advice not to apply too much at once, as it seems like it can pill up a bit when applying other products on top of it. Make sure you use a small amount and wait for it to completely absorb before continuing your skincare routine (moisturizers etc.)
Overall, I haven't had any negative reactions to the Vitamin C (no breakouts- yay!) and even though neroli is a new ingredient for me skincare-wise, it seems to not give me any irritation or issues. Since this serum is so easily absorbed, I've kind of just tossed it into my routine along with my other serum which is a bit thicker in texture. At night, I apply this HA serum after my Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence, and then follow it up with a heavier serum. I usually skip serums during my morning skincare routine, however I've added this one in and have really loved the results. My skin definitely feels softer and smoother, and interestingly enough, my skin seems less oily at the end of the day. I'm not entirely sure if that has to do with this product in particular, but I did notice it starting right around the time I began using this.

  1. Oh man, this post made me cringe. Like you I have been curious after seeing good results in other bloggers, but I still can't get past the whole needles thing. It's not even about pain - I'm the sort of person who has to be subdued before getting a simple shot, haha. I admire your bravery though! If you keep using it, it would be interesting to see a follow-up in a few months.

    1. The word "needles" freaked me out too, but they look more like little spikes...which for some ridiculous reason, made me less nervous LOL. granted, I have a pretty large tattoo, so I assumed it would at least hurt less than that- and it does. I'm going to try to keep using it and see what kind of results I get with my stretch marks and acne scars-hopefully something noticeable or I'll feel dumb for having rolled needles all over my face!

  2. the eye serum is amazing! I wasn't sure if I was going to like it, but I think it is now one of my HG products

    1. I agree it's absolutely fantastic!! I am usually pretty middle-of-the-road with eye products- they seem to moisturize for me and not much else. This one has some great ingredients, and really gives me noticeable results. Very happy with it!

  3. You are very brave to try this! I have never seen something like this in my life. It reminds me of something I could use to dock a pie crust:)

    1. Thank you Jeni! The things I do for blogging! haha ;) I've heard a lot about the benefits of Dermarolling before actually trying it- so I watched a LOT of other people do it first before I got the guts to try it myself haha. And hilariously enough- you're not the first person I've seen say it looks like a kitchen gadget! LOL
