Birchbox Man August 2015 Review and Unboxing

Jeff was super excited for his Birchbox Man this month because of the sample choices. I can't remember them all of the top of my head now, but I know the one he chose he absolutely could not wait to get. The great thing about Birchbox Man is that they include a really nice lifestyle item each month, and like the original Birchbox, they give subscribers a choice to pick one of their samples each month. The difference with Birchbox Man is they let subscribers choose the lifestyle item- which is usually the most valuable and exciting item in the box. Giving subscribers the choice with this item is awesome because even if the other samples aren't amazing, the chosen products always makes the box worth it.

If you're unaware, Birchbox Man is a men's lifestyle and grooming subscription box that costs $20 per month. While the women's Birchbox is only $10 per month, the men's box tends to have more lifestyle products such as clothing, electronics, gadgets etc. There are many different varieties of box each month, and what you receive may be totally different from what you see here. The box contents are chosen based on your profile that is filled out when you subscribe, as well as your sample choice. Birchbox Man allows you to choose from a selection of lifestyle products each month so that you can be sure to love what you get in your box. Although if you'd rather have a surprise, you can also skip making a choice and leave it up to chance.
This month's theme was "Brave New Worlds."
W&P: Enamelware Camp Mug Set
I figured I'd get right into it and show the lifestyle item first. Jeff is an avid camper and thought these would be perfect to take along in his pack when he and his buddies go camping. They're pretty basic metal/tin-like mugs, but I personally thought they were wrapped really nicely and seem very sturdy- which is necessary if you're packing them in a backpack and doing a lot of traveling/walking etc. This set retails for $25, and since this box is only $20 a month, these alone more than pay for the box.
Vaughn: Energy Wash Shower Gel and Mid-Hold Cream
This brand was in Jeff's box last month and we were kind of "meh" on it overall. We both don't like it when he gets the same brand or similar products month-to-month, so I'm really hoping we don't see another random item from Vaughn next month. The shower gel is nice, although Jeff tends to use bar soap much more often. It has a tropical scent while still smelling masculine. Since Jeff doesn't use hair pomades and creams, the foil pack will probably go in the give away pile, though.
Baxter of California: Hydro Salve Hand Cream
This is a pretty heavy-duty hand cream in that it's thick and feels super moisturizing. It's quite a small tube though, so I can't imagine it lasting too long with daily use. It's a good one to put on your desk at work or in the car to have on hand. Jeff doesn't use hand cream often, although I keep trying to get him to use it more regularly. He's not fond of the greasy feeling that lotions leave behind on his hands- unfortunately this one does have a slight residue after use, so it'll probably go in my hand cream stash.
Supergoop! City Sunscreen Serum SPF 30
I'm not entirely sure why, but it always bothers me when products from the Women's boxes end up in the men's box. I mean, it's sunscreen so it's not exactly for women only, but it makes me feel like they didn't have enough men's samples so they threw this in there. I mean, I don't know many guys that will use anything that says "serum" on it, even if it's useful. I know Jeff didn't seem interested in this product at all, although I demanded he keep and use it since the sun has been pretty intense lately! We'll see if he actually uses it!
Game Day: Shave Cream
This shave cream is made with sandalwood, aloe and green tea, although you'd never know it because it smells terrible. I can't exactly explain the scent, but it's almost unscented, but not quite. The scent I can detect is sort of like...glue? I don't know- but it's not pleasant. Jeff and I both thought it was odd to put the shaving cream in a jar and not a tube. I go through shaving cream like water, and since Jeff uses a solid shave bar, this went into my stash. The scentlessness of it doesn't make me want to use it anytime soon, but I'm interested to see if it's a great formula or not- we shall see!
Finally, a weird and unexpected bonus item was in the box this month: a Virtual Reality Viewer! I had no idea what this was, but Jeff knew right away and was able to assemble it pretty easily in less than a minute. You essentially place your cell phone into the back of the view finder and find a virtual reality compatible video online (I believe Birchbox has one on their site) and it's supposedly gives a better than 3D appearance. Jeff tried it out and said it's "pretty cool" although I haven't used it myself yet. It was a pretty interesting little bonus, I think!
Overall Thoughts
Even though Birchbox Man seems to miss the mark often when it comes to skincare/grooming products for Jeff, he still absolutely loves getting this box and especially loves the lifestyle products each month. Between last month's leather journal and this months camping mug set- he's in heaven! He's a bit pickier about products than I am, so while not every grooming item has been a winner for him, he's found a lot of favorites through Birchbox Man, which makes it worth the $20 a month for us. You do have to look at it more as a "discovery service" than anything else- so while the products don't always work, it's always worth it when you find one that becomes an instant fave!

  1. Those mugs are great! But yeah, the other samples leave a lot to be desired. The good thing is that the lifestyle product usually is worth more than the box, right?

    1. Absolutely. Jeff LOVES BB Man otherwise I would kindly nudge him in the direction of a different subscription. But the lifestyle products are what they are always allowed to choose, and since he consistently gets a valuable lifestyle product, everything else is just gravy! September's box he'll be getting a really beautiful pair of wood grain ear bud that are worth $40+, which is double what we spend on the box anyway- so as long as they continue doing that it'll be worth it in my opinion!
