PopSugar Must Have: October 2015 Review and Unboxing

I'm not going to go into my monthly spiel about how amazing PopSugar Must Have Box is and why I think that to this day, no matter how many subscriptions come out it's still the best overall in terms of value and product curation. You all know by now how I feel about them. So I'll just say this: If you're not subscribed yet- you should probably do that. (Although I would suggest you wait until Cyber Monday- their sales are always insanely good!)

The Deets
PopSugar Must Have Box is a subscription that sends you full size "must have" items from all areas of interest: fitness, beauty, skincare, home decor, books- you name it! You never know what is going to show up in these boxes, and that's why they're always so much fun to recieve!
PopSugar costs $39.99 per month, however you can save more by buying a longer subscription, or if you gift yourself a box each month, you can use the frequent coupon codes they have available. You can use the code (REFER5) to save $5 off your first box, currently!

Each month, Lisa Sugar (PopSugar's Founder) will put all of the things that inspired the box on the info card.
This month was inspired by:
Autumn, Restful nights, cozy, irresistible, breast cancer awareness.

Savvy Sleepers: Luxury Satin Pillowcase ($36)
Let me just say how ridiculously excited I was to see this pillowcase! First of all, this is a very unique item that you don't tend to see in subscription boxes. Second of all, I was doing research on sleeping habits and how they effect/don't effect your skin etc. The idea behind satin pillowcases is that they help prevent sleep wrinkles and help reduce hair breakage. I've seen people be skeptical of this, but it's true! (Read more about the benefits of sleeping on Satin here) Most the time, sleeping on a cotton pillowcase isn't going to give you wrinkles, however as we lose collagen in our skin, it starts to lose it's ability to "snap" back. I know form personal experience! I sleep on my right side- without fail. Every single night. Over the years I've noticed a wrinkle form right below my eye where my face squishes into the pillow. It slowly goes away over the course of the day- but I'm concerned one day it's going to be here to stay. I love the idea of a soft, slippery pillow case helping me avoid those "sleep wrinkles!" This pillowcase also has a little hidden pouch inside where you can hide something away, or for a more practical use- put some lavender sprigs in there to help you relax before bed!

Mindy Kaling: Why Not Me? ($25)
I know plenty of my friends and family who absolutely love Mindy Kaling. She's an actor, producer and writer who just so happens to be hilarious, although I will admit I never watched her TV nor have I read any of her books before. Having said that, I've only heard great things about her previous book, so I'm actually looking forward to reading this. I could use a good laugh every now and then!

Belgian Boys: Stroopwafel ($1.59)
I can confidently say that I drooled a little bit when I saw this snack in my box this month. These are one of my all-time favorite sweet snacks! Take a 2 waffle cones and flatten them out, put some gooey caramel between them and you've got yourself the most delicious treat you'll ever snack on. These are just perfect as they are, however they are made in this round shape so you can place them on top of your coffee mug or tea cup to warm/soften them up. They are also ridiculously tasty that way, too!

Easy, Tiger: Brown Paper Liquor Bag Set ($8)
Hmm. Well...I'm sure these are awesome for some people, but this was the one item in the box this month that I will most likely not use. I don't think I've ever gifted someone a bottle of wine before, and if I did, I don't think I would wrap it in a brown paper bag. I don't know...these aren't a terrible idea but I feel like these would have been more appropriate for the November or December Box. They just seem kind of misplaced with the rest of the items this month. I suppose they'd be cute for anyone who drinks/gifts a lot of wine, but unfortunately that's not me.

Richer Poorer: Hope Slipper Socks ($15)
Last month I said I would not be happy with the October box unless it included a candle and/or a pair of comfy socks. Looks like PopSugar delivered! These socks were designed by and exclusive to PopSugar. They chose the pink color not only because it's their brand color, but because of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I have been wearing these non-stop since I got this box, honestly. They pull up almost halfway to my knee, they are incredibly, ridiculously soft, they're thick and warm, AND they have little grippies on the bottom so I won't slip and fall while rushing to turn my heater on in the morning! Probably my favorite thing in the box this month, honestly! Give me a pair of comfy socks and I'm happy!

The Honest Company: Sea Salt + Sugar Body Scrub ($17)
The Honest Company has been all over the place this past year, but I haven't actually tried any of their products personally. I'm happy that my first product from them is a body scrub. I don't really use them that often during the Summer, but I feel like I blow through body scrubs in the Winter! This one contains whole grain sugars and salt to exfoliate while shea butter and almond oil hydrate the skin. This has a very light lavender/vanilla scent. It's super relaxing! It seems like the perfect product to use during a before-bed shower!

It's a 10: Miracle Leave-In Product ($11.96)
This is a sample size product and is considered one of two "special extras." This mist adds shine, stops frizz, detangles, conditions and makes your hair smell amazing. I am an avid fan of the "light" version of this spray since my hair is pretty thin, although I will definitely be using this one as well. It's one of my favorite products for my hair because it has a very pleasant scent that lingers in my hair long after I've used the product. I feel like my hair is so much easier to brush after I use this, and my split ends look a lot less dead and scraggly!

Danielle Stevens Jewelry $40 Monogram Gift Card/ Coupons
The last "special extra" was a "gift card" to Danielle Stevens Jewelry. The bummer about this is that it can only be used on the monogram pieces, which I have never really been into. Plus the least expensive monogram item is around $50, so I don't think I'll be using this at all. PopSugar also included a bunch of coupon codes as well as a card that states  that they have made a donation to "Right Action for Women" in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Overall Thoughts
PopSugar Must Have costs $40 per month, and the October box has a total value of $102.59. If you include the special extras the value goes up to $154.18. Both are great values, although I don't really consider the Danielle Stevens gift card as part of the value since it's not an actual item, nor is it enough to outright purchase anything on their site without putting money into it. I do think it's a nice bonus item though- especially considering Christmas is around the bend! It might be a good thing to use to put toward a Christmas gift for someone!

As for the overall curation of this box, I did think it was a little odd. If you take away the "special extras" since they're really not part of the overall curation, I think that it could work. I see this curation as a relaxing night at home. Start off with a warm shower and use the sugar scrub,  slip into those comfy socks and crawl into bed to read a book and snack on a stroopwafel (yummm). Then head to sleep on your new satin pillow! The only product that doesn't work here, like I mentioned earlier, is the paper liquor bags. They just throw the entire vibe off of this box. I think a  fall-scented travel candle would have been a  much better choice, but that's just me! I think that the curation was decent, and I will definitely use almost everything here as usual! No major complaints, although not the most mind-blowing box I've ever gotten.

I do know that the November box will include a Tarte Eye Shadow Quad, so it's already being set up to be awesome in my opinion! Excited to see what else they'll have in store for us!

  1. These boxes are cool but $39 is a lot to spend if I'm not going to like every single product inside of it and it's rare that I've seen any gift box where every single item is a hit. Like the wine bags here; that's just odd.
